News: The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred Swachh Survekshan awards 2023 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

What are Swachh Survekshan Awards?
• The Swachh Survekshan Awards are part of the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission, initiated by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in India. The awards recognize achievements in urban sanitation and cleanliness across cities in India.
• The awards are based on a survey conducted across more than 4,500 cities. The survey evaluates cities on 46 indicators, including
segregated door-to-door waste collection, zero waste events, disabled-friendly toilets, and improved plastic waste management.
• The cities have been ranked based on three broad parameters– service level progress, citizen’s voice and certification.
• The awards are given in various categories such as Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns, and Best Performing State.

Key Findings:
• Cleanest Cities: Indore and Surat were jointly awarded the title of the cleanest cities in India. This was the seventh consecutive win for Indore, and a first for Surat.
• Population-Based Categories: In the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Sasvad, Patan, and Lonavala secured the top three spots.
• Cleanest Cantonment: Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the Cleanest Cantonment Board.
• Cleanest Ganga Towns: Varanasi and Prayagraj won the top two awards amongst the Cleanest Ganga Towns.
• Best Performing State: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh won the top three awards for Best Performing State.
• Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher: Chandigarh walked away with the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher.
• Launch of Dashboard: The President of India launched the Swachh Survekshan 2023 dashboard.
• Theme for 2023: The theme for the year 2023 was “Waste to Wealth”, emphasizing the importance of creating wealth out of waste for overall cleanliness.
