Migration and Mobility Agreement
News: Recently, The Union Cabinet, has granted ex-post facto approval to the Migration and Mobility Agreement between India and Italy.
About:
• The ‘Migration and Mobility Agreement’ between India and Italy is a pact that aims to facilitate the smooth movement of workers, students, and professionals between the two countries. This agreement was signed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani.
• The agreement is expected to enhance people-to-people contacts and foster mobility of students.
• With a population of around 1,80,000, the Indian diaspora in Italy is the third-largest in Europe, following the UK and the Netherlands.
Key Provisions:
• Granting temporary residence in Italy for up to 12 months to Indian students seeking initial professional experience after completing academic or vocational training.
• Reserves quotas for non-seasonal and seasonal Indian workers under the existing labour mobility pathways.
• Cooperation in combating irregular migration.
