Mahaparinirvana Diwas

Mahaparinirvana Diwas

News: Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed on December 6th every year to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

About:
• The term “Mahaparinirvan” is a Sanskrit word that means 'freedom after death’. It is one of the primary principles of Buddhism, symbolizing the release or freedom of the soul from the body after death.
• Dr. Ambedkar, who was a social reformer, jurist, economist, author, and a scholar of comparative religions, converted to Buddhism later in his life and was considered a Buddhist leader by his followers. His death anniversary is referred to as Mahaparinirvan Diwas due to his stature as a Buddhist leader.
• On this day, thousands of people, including his followers, gather at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai, where his mortal remains were cremated, to pay their homage. The day is observed across India to remember Dr. Ambedkar’s invaluable contributions to society.
