Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness Initiative
News: Recently, the Chief of Naval Staff addresses the fourth edition of the Goa Maritime Conclave and highlighted importance of Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA).
About IPMDA:
• The Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) Initiative was announced at the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Tokyo, 2022. It was proposed by the Quad grouping, which includes India, Australia, Japan, and the U.S.
• The initiative primarily aims to track dark shipping, which refers to vessels that have their Automatic Identification System (AIS) – a transponder system – switched off so as not to be detectable.
• It focuses on tracking other tactical-level activities, responding to climate and humanitarian events, and protecting fisheries, which are vital to many Indo-Pacific economies.
• The IPMDA initiative represents a substantial effort to bolster security and stability in the Indo-Pacific, a region of paramount global geopolitical significance.
