About:
• Casgevy is a groundbreaking CRISPR-based therapy for treating sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, two blood disorders.
• It was developed by CRISPR Therapeutics, a Swiss company co-founded by Nobel laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a large Boston-based biotech firm.
• Casgevy works by editing the faulty gene in a patient’s bone marrow stem cells so that the body produces functioning haemoglobin. For this to work, stem cells are taken out of bone marrow, edited in the lab, and then infused back into the patient, with the potential to cure people.
• This therapy marks a historic milestone as it is the first-ever approved CRISPR-based therapy and the first medicine to be licensed that uses the innovative gene-editing tool CRISPR. The inventors of CRISPR were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2020.
