Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)

Context: In this age of rapid technological advancement, a remarkable journey of deploying Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has been embarked upon by India, reshaping the nation’s socio-economic landscape.

About DPI:

• Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) refers to foundational digital infrastructure and platforms established by governments to enable the delivery of digital services to citizens.

• DPI encompasses various technologies and systems aimed at enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, andN inclusivity of public services in the digital era.

• Foundational elements of DPI include:

• Digital Identification Systems: Programs such as Aadhaar in India that provide citizens with a unique  digital identity.

• Payment Infrastructure: Platforms like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India that facilitate secure and efficient digital transactions.

• Data Exchange Solutions: Frameworks that facilitate secure and standardized data exchange between different entities for improved service delivery and governance.

DPI in India:

• India leads globally in digital transactions, surpassing combined figures of the US, China, and Europe.
• The digital economy in India is expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2025.
• This growth is supported by a large internet user base, with over 759 million active users, including a significant number in rural areas.
• The Aadhaar program, a digital ID system, has enrolled nearly 1.3 billion citizens, enabling efficient delivery of welfare services, financial transactions, and government schemes.
• The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is experiencing rapid growth, projected to handle a billion transactions daily by 2026.
• Broadband connectivity has expanded significantly, reaching over 93% of Indian villages.
• These achievements highlight India’s dedication to creating a digitally empowered and inclusive society.
