QR Codes on Food Products
News: Recently, The FSSAI has recommended the use of QR codes on food products to make information accessible to visually impaired individuals.
Why?
• It aims to ensure that everyone, including those with special needs, can access safe food. Food labelling should enable all consumers to make informed choices.
• The use of QR codes is suggested to provide comprehensive product details, including ingredients, nutritional information, allergens, manufacturing dates, and more. This approach complements the existing mandatory labelling requirements and aligns with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
What are Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations 2020?
• It is a set of regulations by FSSAI that addresses gaps in previous regulations. It introduces new requirements like allergen information, nutrient contributions, expiry dates, logos, and symbols. Even ecommerce platforms must label food products for sale, and large restaurant chains are included in these regulations.
