Gandhiji’s 154th Birth anniversary
News: Recently, Gandhiji’s 154th birth anniversary was celebrated to remember and reflect upon his life principles
and philosophy that has guided the nation.

• Gandhiji believed that music could instill nationalism and pride in people, making them feel connected to the freedom movement. For example, chanting of hyms, prabhat pheris (musical processions) played key role in conveying nationalistic sentiments during Dandi Yatra.
• Choice of music - Gandhiji preferred simple, devotional music that could be easily hummed and sung by the common man.
• Gandhiji was deeply impressed by vocalists like MS Subbulakshmi, who sang with such depth and devotion that it deeply moved him.

Non-violence
• His idea of non-violence extended beyond human beings. He was a vegetarian who believed in well-being of
creatures and knew the importance living in harmony with nature.
Gandhi promoted the Swadeshi movement
• It encouraged the use of locally produced goods and materials. This concept aimed to reduce the ecological impact of long-distance trade and promote local economies.
Self-sufficiency
• Gandhi emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency at the community level. He promoted the idea of villages being self-reliant in terms of food, clothing, and other basic needs.
