News: The river is in news as recently Tamil Nadu cancelled the decision to open the spillway shutters of Mullaperiyar dam.

About:
• The Mullaperiyar River is a tributary of the Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.
• Source: The Mullaperiyar River originates at Kottamalai peak in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. It flows west through the reserve and joins
the Periyar River at Mullakudy.
• Drainage: The Periyar River, into which the Mullaperiyar drains, has a total length of approximately 244 kilometres and a catchment
area of 5,398 square kilometres. It flows entirely through Kerala and joins the sea in Kerala.
• Tributaries: The main tributaries of the Periyar River are the Muthirapuzha River, Mullayar River, Cheruthoni River, Perinjankutti
River, and Edamala River.
• Dam: The Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam constructed on the Periyar River in the Idukki district of Kerala. It is situated 150
km southeast of Kochi and is located 881 m above sea level, on the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats in Thekkady, Idukki District of Kerala, India. The dam was constructed between 1887 and 1895.
