Madhika language

News: Madhika, a language spoken by the Chakaliya community is fast becoming extinct.

• The Madhika language is a unique language spoken by the Chakaliya community, primarily in the remote colony of Kookanam, Kerala.
• It’s a blend of several languages, including Telugu, Tulu, Kannada, and Malayalam. However, Madhika is on the brink of extinction, with only two known speakers remaining.
• The language has no script, which makes its preservation even more challenging. The younger generation, drawn to mainstream languages like Malayalam, shows little interest in preserving Madhika.

About Chakaliya community:
• The Chakaliya community has a rich history. They were once nomadic and worshipped Thiruvenkatramana and Mariamma. Centuries ago, they migrated from the hilly regions of Karnataka to northern Malabar in Kerala.
• Initially recognized as a Scheduled Tribe, they were later included in the Scheduled Caste category in Kerala.
