Kampala Declaration

News: The Kampala Declaration is a document that was adopted by 48 African countries in August 2023 to address the link between climate change and human mobility in the continent. It is also known as the Kampala Ministerial Declaration on Migration, Environment and Climate Change (KDMECC)

About:
• The Declaration outlines the concerns and challenges faced by African countries due to the effects of climate change on migration, displacement, and planned relocation.
• It also calls for enhanced cooperation and action among African states, regional organizations, the African Union, the United Nations, and other stakeholders to address these issues.

The Declaration covers five areas of concern:
• Progressive desertification and land degradation creating forced mobility of people and livestock
• Unsustainable use of ecosystems and the impact of frequent and intense extreme weather events on people and livestock
• Unplanned migration of people from rural to urban centres as a result of climate change and disasters
• Cross-border movement of people due to environmental degradation and climate change
• Planned relocation as a possible adaptation strategy to climate change
