News: The Indian Navy has decommissioned INS Kirpan and handed it over to Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN)— reflecting the growing defense ties and strategic partnership between New Delhi and Hanoi.
About INS Kirpan
• INS Kirpan is the name of a Khukri-class corvette that was commissioned by the Indian Navy in 1991.
• The ship has been an integral part of the Navy’s Eastern Fleet and has participated in several operational and humanitarian assistance missions. Significance of agreement with Vietnam:
• The transfer of INS Kirpan is seen as a move to bolster sea vigil in the region, especially in the South China Sea, where China has been asserting its claims over disputed waters.
• It also reflects India’s Act East policy and its aim to create capabilities for friendly navies operating in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR)
