Indian Art, Architecture and Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023

News: The Prime Minister recently inaugurated the First Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023 being held at Red Fort.

About:
• Organized by Ministry of Culture, it is India’s first Global Cultural Initiative to showcase Indian art, architecture and designs.
• The event includes the inauguration of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design (ABCD) and the student Biennale, Samunnati.
• It seeks to institutionalise a global cultural initiative in India, similar to the ones organised at places like Venice, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Sydney and Sharjah and it will initiate a conversation between artists, architects, designers and others to strengthen the cultural dialogue.
• The exhibitions will be based on seven themes – Doors of India, Gardens of India, Baolis (stepwells) of India, Temples of India, Architectural Wonders of Independent India, Indigenous Design and Women in Architecture and Design.

What is Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design (ABCD)?
• The Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design (ABCD), also known as Project Aatman, is an initiative set up by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is housed in a colonial-era barrack on the premises of the Red Fort complex in Delhi.
• The ABCD aims to pave the way for a sustainable cultural economy derived from the indigenous crafts of India by empowering the artisan communities with new designs and innovations. The Centre’s philosophy is to facilitate a self-reliant India, a mission led by the Prime Minister of India in relation to the economic development of the country.
• Due to rapid global industrialization and technological advancement, the traditional handicraft sector has suffered a setback in the competing markets of today. Therefore, it has become necessary to facilitate innovation in crafts that will lead to the creation of an interesting juxtaposition of traditional skills and contemporary taste.
• This Centre will not only reinvent the craft sector but will also provide economic stability and livelihood to the people associated with it.
