Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary

News: Recently, An IISc study conducted in Arunachal Pradesh’s Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary reveals the threat posed to montane birds by logging and climate change.

About:
• The Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Himalayan foothills of the West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is situated near the international border with Bhutan.
• The sanctuary is part of the Kameng protected area complex, the largest contiguous closed-canopy forest tract of Arunachal Pradesh.
• It conjoins Sessa Orchid Sanctuary to the northeast and Pakhui Tiger Reserve across the Kameng river to the east.

Flora, Fauna and Vegetation:
• The sanctuary has a wide range of forest types due to its extreme altitude range.
• The vegetation includes tropical evergreen forests in the lower elevations, temperate broad-leaved forests in the mid altitudes, and conifers and rhododendrons at the highest elevations. Most parts of Eaglenest have extensive bamboo cover.
• The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of herpetofauna including at least 34 species of amphibians, 24 species of snakes, and 7 species of lizards.
• Mammals found at the Sanctuary include Asian elephant, capped langur, Bengal tiger, red panda, gaur, Asiatic black bear, and Arunachal macaque.
• Over 700 species of birds are known from a 100 sq. km. region centered around Eaglenest.

Festivals celebrated here:
• Eaglenest Birding Festival: This festival is celebrated to promote tourism and the preservation of bird species in the area.
• Bugun Liocichla Utsav: This festival commemorates the discovery of the Bugun Liocichla bird. It is a fiveday event held at the Eaglenest wildlife sanctuary and includes activities like film screening, bird watching, and trekking
