News: Recently it was observed that China is expanding its trade influence in South America with a new mega port project in the Peruvian town of Chancay.

Background:
• China’s state-owned conglomerate, COSCO Shipping Ports, along with the Peruvian mining company Volcan, is constructing a new state-of-the-art port terminal in Chancay.
• The project is expected to cost 3.2 Billion dollars and will be first logistics hub controlled by China in Peru.

About Peru:
• Peru is located in the western part of South America, just below the equator.
• It shares its borders with five countries - Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast and Chile to the south.
• Peru also has a western border along the Pacific Ocean.

Physical features in Peru
• Costa (Coastal Region): This is a narrow strip of desert plain that stretches along the Pacific Ocean.
• Sierra (Highland Region): This region includes the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains, among them Huascarán, the highest peak in Peru, standing at 22,205 feet (6,768 meters).
• Selva (Jungle Region): This is the largest of the three regions, encompassing the vast Amazon Rainforest, featuring numerous rivers, the most significant of which is the Amazon River.
