Context: Project Raptor Watch (PRW) of the Madras Naturalist’s Society has been tracking peregrine falcons in Chennai for two years and aims to document, study, and monitor raptor species in several districts of Tamil Nadu.


About:


• The Peregrine Falcon is among the most widespread birds globally, found on all continents except Antarctica and many oceanic islands.
• They prefer open habitats like grasslands, tundra, and meadows, with a higher abundance in tundra and coastal regions and are less common in sub-tropical and tropical areas. They typically nest on cliff faces and crevices.
• Active during the day, Peregrine Falcons are primarily solitary when not breeding and establish and defend territories.
• Ecologically, they serve as high-level predators, playing a crucial role in controlling populations of prey species, particularly pigeons and doves.
• Conservation Status:
• IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern.
