Urban Flood Mitigation project
News: Recently, PM Modi approved the first urban flood mitigation project for the ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management Activities for Chennai Basin Project (IUFM).
About:
• The Urban Flood Mitigation Project for Chennai, also known as the ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’, is the first of its kind in India. This project was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has been allocated a budget of ₹561.29 crore under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).
• The central assistance for this project is ₹500 crore.
• This project aims to address the challenges posed by urban flooding and is designed to enhance Chennai’s resilience to such natural disasters by implementing comprehensive flood management strategies. The project will focus on improving the city’s infrastructure to better manage excessive rainwater, thereby reducing the risk of flooding and minimizing the impact on residents’ lives and livelihoods.
