Teesta River
News: The river has been in news due to Flash floods in Sikkim.
About Teesta River:
• The Teesta River originates from the Pahunri Glacier in the Himalayas, located in the state of Sikkim, India. It is one of the major rivers in the eastern Himalayas.
• The Teesta River flows in a southerly direction through the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal before entering Bangladesh.
• In Sikkim, it forms the boundary between Sikkim and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. After entering West Bengal, it continues to flow southward before crossing into Bangladesh.
• It passes Rangpo and Kalimpong in Sikkim and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
Major Tributaries:
• Rangit, Lachen, Lachung, Amo Chu.
Drainage:
• The Teesta River ultimately drains into the Bay of Bengal. It is a critical river for both India and Bangladesh, supporting agriculture and providing water resources for various uses in the region.
