News: Recently, Indian Army has inducted the lighter and more compact version of the indigenously developed Weapon Locating Radar(WLR-M) called “Swathi Mountains.”

What is Swathi Mountains?
• Swathi Mountains is a new version of the indigenously developed Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) by the Indian Army. It is an advanced electronically scanned phased array radar, specifically designed for operations in mountainous and high-altitude areas.
• It was developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru.

What are its key features?
• It can detect and track hostile artillery, mortars,and rocket launchers, as well as friendly firetrajectories, enabling precise calculations for moreaccurate artillery strikes.
• It can classify projectile and non-projectile targets, rejecting unwanted signals like birds, clutter, and aircraft.
• It can estimate the trajectory and launch/impact point of projectiles, automatically correcting for height to enhance accuracy.
• It can store and display trajectory data and maintain communication with higher echelons for better   coordination.
• It is more compact and mobile than the Swathi Plains version, which is designed for flat terrains. It has a slewable platform that allows it to scan different areas without the need for physical repositioning.
