Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary

News: Recently, The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given the state government a six-month deadline to address issues causing the delay in notifying the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) status for Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary.

About:
• The Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous wildlife sanctuary located in the Shimoga (Shivamogga) district of Karnataka, India.
• Flora: The sanctuary is mainly covered by tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. The eastern and central parts are mostly covered by dry and moist deciduous forests while the western parts have semievergreen forests.
• Fauna: The sanctuary is home to numerous species of wild animals such as the Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Jackal, Spotted Deer, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Giant Flying Squirrel, Pangolin, Porcupine, Common Mongoose, Bonnet Macaque, Sloth Bear, Common Langur, Wild Pig, and various others.
• Avifauna: The sanctuary includes several species of exotic birds. Bulbuls, Parakeets, Woodpeckers, Doves, Munias, Hornbills, Kingfishers, Pigeons, Babblers, Flycatchers, Swallows, Peafowl, Jungle fowl and Partridges are some of the species that can be spotted within the sanctuary.
• Rivers flowing through it include Thunga River and Kumadwathi River.
