Nari Adalats

News: The Indian government is launching a unique initiative to establish women-only courts (known as Nari Adalats) at the village level as an alternative dispute resolution forum for issues such as domestic violence and property rights.

Background:
• The pilot project will start in 50 villages each in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir in August and will later be expanded to the rest of the country.
• Nari Adalat scheme is part of the WCD Ministry guidelines for the Mission Shakti umbrella scheme, which aims to enhance the safety and empowerment of women.

What is Nari Adalat?
• Nari Adalat is a gender-sensitive and an informal Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) platform. It is an innovation of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), in response to the rise in the number of cases of violence against women.
• It is envisaged as an alternative grievance redressal mechanism to resolve “petty” disputes at the gram panchayat level. Cases of petty nature include harassment, subversion, curtailment of rights or entitlements
• Nari Adalat is led by women’s collectives or Nyaya Sakhis (legal friends), who are trained in legal awareness and constitutional entitlements.
• Each Nari Adalat consists of 7-11 members, who do not receive any remuneration but are provided with some out-of-pocket expenses and logistical support.
• The members facilitate dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation between the parties involved in the
disputes, without resorting to formal judicial procedures.
• Nari Adalat is expected to empower women and promote gender justice at the grassroots level, by providing them with a platform to voice their concerns and seek resolution in a dignified and respectful manner.
