Krishna Godavari Basin
News: The Indian government has started extracting its first crude oil from the Krishna Godavari Basin.
Key Findings:
• The state-controlled Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) initiated oil extraction from its flagship deep-water project in the Krishna Godavari Basin, located offshore the nation’s eastern coast.
• Four of the 26 wells are already operational, and by May or June, production is predicted to reach 45,000 barrels per day, which represents 7% of India’s total crude oil production.
• The 98/2 project is likely to increase ONGC’s total Oil and Gas production by 11 percent and 15 percent respectively.
About Krishna-Godavari basin:
• The Krishna Godavari Basin is a peri-cratonic passive margin basin in India. It is spread across more than 50,000 square kilometers in the Krishna River and Godavari River basins in Andhra Pradesh. The basin is known for the D-6 block where Reliance Industries discovered the biggest natural gas reserves in India in 2003.
• The basin contains about 5 km thick sediments with several cycles of deposition, ranging in age from Late Carboniferous to Pleistocene.
