• It is observed every year on 26 July, the date when the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that had been occupied by Pakistani forces.
• The Kargil War was an armed conflict that started after Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated across the Line of Control (LoC) and took control of several strategic heights in the Kargil district of Ladakh. The Indian Army launched a massive operation, codenamed Operation Vijay, to evict the intruders and restore India’s sovereignty.
• The significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas is to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers who fought valiantly and laid down their lives for the nation.
