Kaladan Multi-modal Transit Transport project (KMTTP)

News: The project is in news as important areas such as Paleta and along Kaladan river is facing conflicts which is further disturbing the completion of the project. It is a significant project as far as India’s geo-political and geo-strategic interests are concerned.

About:
• The KMTTP is a joint initiative by India and Myanmar. The project aims to create a multi-modal mode of transport for the shipment of cargo from the eastern ports of India to Myanmar, as well as to the North-Eastern part of India through Myanmar.
• The project connects the Sittwe Port in Myanmar to the IndiaMyanmar border.

Challenges faced:
• Security Issues: The route of the project around Paletwa and along the Kaladan river is troubled with Chin conflict, Rohingya conflict, and militant groups such as Arakan Army and Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).
• Environmental Concerns: Plans to construct hydro-electric projects on two tributaries of the Kaladan River followed by another project downstream raised environmental concerns.

Significance for India:
• Alternate Route: The project will reduce the distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1,328 km and will reduce the need to transport goods through the narrow Siliguri corridor, also known as Chicken’s Neck.
• Strategic Link: It provides a strategic link to the North-East, thereby reducing pressure on the Siliguri Corridor.
• Enhanced Economic Ties: The KMTT would also enhance economic ties between coastal Indian urban hubs and the Myanmar economy.
