News: Recently, Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), India’s largest cancer treatment facility, is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address the increasing challenge of cancer cases.

About:
• The Bio-Imaging Bank is an initiative by Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), the largest cancer treatment facility in India. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning to create a cancerspecific algorithm for early-stage cancer detection.

Key Features:
• It is a comprehensive repository of radiology and pathology images, linked with clinical information.
• The bank is used for training and testing AI algorithms.
• The project initially focuses on lung cancers and head-neck cancers, with at least 1000 patients for each of these cancer types.
• The project aims to train and test a variety of AI algorithms with the help of the data collected, catering to important medical tasks like nucleus segmentation, screening for lymph node metastases, therapy response prediction, and more.
• The Department of Biotechnology, in collaboration with RGCIRC- New Delhi, PGIMER- Chandigarh, IITBombay, and AIIMS-New Delhi, has funded the project.

Significance:
• The Bio-Imaging Bank has already shown promising results, reducing radiation exposure for pediatric patients by 40% using AI. The hospital envisions AI playing a transformative role in cancer treatment, enhancing precision, and enabling timely diagnoses, particularly in rural India.
