News: Authorities in Indonesia’s Aceh province have issued an order requiring men and women not immediately
related or married to stay apart in vehicles and public spaces.

 Aceh province is a special autonomous region of
Indonesia, located on the northern tip of Sumatra island. It
is the only province in Indonesia that implements Islamic
law, or sharia, as its legal system.
 Aceh is known as the “Porch of Mecca” because it was the
first place in Southeast Asia to embrace Islam in the 13th
century.
 Aceh’s implementation of sharia law has been controversial
and criticized by some human rights groups for violating the
rights of women, minorities, and LGBT people.
