Context: The sanctioning of 113 roads under the Vibrant Village Programme in Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim to enhance connectivity in border areas was recently approved by the Home Ministry.

Vibrant Village Programme Overview

Scheme Type

-Centrally Sponsored Scheme implemented from financial years 2022-23 to
2025-26.

Objective

-Comprehensive development of villages and blocks along the northern border
to improve the quality of life and encourage people to stay in their native
areas, thus enhancing border security.

Coverage

-Development targeted for 2967 villages in 19 Districts and 46 Border blocks
across 4 states (Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh)
and 1 Union Territory (Ladakh).

Areas of Intervention

- Promotion of tourism and cultural heritage
- Skill development and entrepreneurship
- Development of cooperative societies (agriculture/horticulture, medicinal plants/herbs, etc.)
- Road connectivity to unconnected villages
- Housing and village infrastructure
- Energy, including renewable energy
- Television and telecom connectivity

Implementation Approach

-District administrations, along with Gram Panchayats, will develop Vibrant
Village Action Plans

Overlap with Border Area Development Programme

-No overlap with the Border Area Development Programme.
