Lab Grown Diamond

Lab Grown Diamond

Context: The lab-grown diamond industry sees India playing a significant role, positioning itself as the world\'s second-largest producer of precious stones created in laboratories rather than extracted from the earth.

About:

Properties of Laboratory-Grown DiamondsDescription
Chemical, Optical, and Physical PropertiesEssentially the same as natural diamonds, consisting of
tightly-bonded carbon atoms and responding to light
similarly. They are just as hard as natural diamonds.
OriginProduced using specific technology to mimic the
geological processes that grow natural diamonds
Diamond SimulantUsed to mimic the appearance of natural diamonds,
including Moissanite, Cubic Zirconia (CZ), White Sapphire,
YAG, and others.
Production Methods
- High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT)
Mimics the conditions under which natural diamonds are
formed inside the earth. Involves extreme pressures and
temperatures.
- Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVDGrows laboratory-grown diamonds using moderate
temperatures and lower pressures by depositing carboncontaining gas onto a diamond seed in a vacuum
chambe
Applications
- Used for industrial purposes such as machines
and tools due to their hardness and strength.
- Pure synthetic diamonds used in electronics as
heat spreaders for high-power laser diodes,
laser arrays, and high-power transistors
Production and Global RoleIndia produces over three million lab-grown diamonds
annually and accounts for 15% of global production.
Quality Improvement through HPHTLower-quality diamonds, whether natural or laboratorygrown, can undergo the HPHT process to enhance color.
This process can also be used to produce colored
diamonds.
Color Alteration via HPHTThe HPHT method can be utilized to change the color of
diamonds, including pink, blue, or yellow, providing
flexibility in meeting market demands.
