News: Recently, parents of children suffering from Niemann-Pick disease, are urging the Indian government to include it in the National Policy for Rare Diseases.
About:
• Niemann-Pick disease is a group of severe inherited metabolic disorders, in which sphingomyelin accumulates in lysosomes in cells. This disease affects the body’s ability to metabolize fat (cholesterol and lipids) within cells. These cells malfunction and, over time, die. Niemann-Pick disease can affect the brain, nerves, liver, spleen, bone marrow and, in severe cases, lungs.
• Symptoms - Enlarged liver and spleen, Loss of appetite, Loss of muscle tone, Seizure, Uneasiness
