News: Recently, the Union Cabinet approved PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to provide 300 units of free electricity to 1 crore families.
About:
• The scheme aims to provide free electricity to households in India by promoting the use of solar power.
• Subsidy for Solar Panels: Households will be provided with a subsidy to install solar panels on their roofs. The subsidy will cover up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels.
• Beneficiaries: The scheme is expected to benefit 1 crore households across India.
• Savings: It is estimated that the scheme will save the government Rs. 75,000 crore per year in electricity costs.
• Investment: The scheme, aimed at promoting solar power and sustainable development, involves an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore.
• Incentives for Local Bodies: Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats shall be incentivised to promote rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions.
