Garba of Gujarat: Evolution from Sacred Ritual to Intangible Cultural Heritage

 Key Highlights & Summary

 • Garba was officially inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2023.

• The word Garba originates from the Sanskrit term Garbhdeep, referring to an earthen pot with circular perforations housing an internal lamp that symbolizes the human body and the divine soul (Shakti).

• Dedicated to worshipping the feminine divinity (Goddess Ambe Maa) during Navratri, Garba has evolved from an intimate village temple dance performed by women into a global, multicrore cultural enterprise.

• Over centuries, Garba songs were transmitted orally through generations, supported by artisan communities such as potters, carpenters, and costume designers who sustain its material culture.

 • Modern celebrations feature varied adaptations including traditional sheris (street Garba), theme-based events, eco-friendly venues, and commercialized mega-performances.

• The festival forms a crucial pillar of Gujarat creative economy, generating employment across event planning, sound and light engineering, textiles, and jewelry industries.
