News: Trinity Saioo, the 2021 Padma Shri winner known as the “Turmeric Trinity,” who was recognized for her work in promoting Lakadong turmeric cultivation in Meghalaya, is now focusing on promoting the unique “Makhir” ginger of the state.

About Makhir Ginger:
• “Makhir” ginger, also known as “Ing Makhir” or “Sying Makhir” by the locals of Meghalaya, is an indigenous ginger variety native to the hilly terrains of Meghalaya. It is scientifically known as Zingiber rubens.
• This ginger is known for its distinct pungency and medicinal properties. Despite its small size, it is known for its health benefits.
• It is abundantly found in villages along the AssamMeghalaya border, villages such as Khatkasla and Sahsniang, Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The Ing Makhir ginger requires a significantly rich soil to thrive and a moderate supply of water.

About Lakadong turmeric:
• Under the “One District One Product” scheme, Lakadong turmeric gained recognition in the West Jaintia Hills district. It is distinguished by its high curcumin levels and antioxidant properties.
