El Niño to Peak During Oct-Dec This Year, Says US Climate Agency

Key Highlights & Summary

• Peak Phase Projection: The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned that the ongoing El Niño event is set to reach its peak intensity during OctoberDecember 2026.

• Historic Climate Event: The 2026 El Niño phenomenon is projected to be one of the most intense events recorded since 1950.

• Ocean Warming Trends: Sea surface temperatures across key Niño regions rose significantly in August, recording anomalies between 1.8°C to 3°C above average.

• Intensifying Niño Index: The Niño index for the June-August period rose to 1.4°C, marking a 0.4°C increase from the preceding May-July window.

• High Probability of \'Very Strong\' Category: NOAA reports a greater than 90% chance that the phenomenon will transition into a \'very strong\' event and persist through the winter season.

 • Global Climate Consequences: The intensifying condition increases the risk of global weather anomalies, inducing severe heatwaves, altered rainfall distribution, and extended droughts.

Essential Definitions

• El Niño: A complex climate pattern involving the periodic, abnormal warming of sea surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

• El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO): The recurring climate cycle involving fluctuations in ocean temperatures and atmospheric pressure patterns across the tropical Pacific.

 • Niño Index: A standardized metric used by meteorologists to track sea surface temperature anomalies in designated regions of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Legal and Constitutional Framework

• Article 48A of the Indian Constitution (DPSP): Mandates that the State shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and safeguard forests and wildlife.

 • Disaster Management Act, 2005: Provides the statutory framework for national disaster preparedness, mitigation, and emergency responses to extreme climate hazards such as severe droughts.

• National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC): India\'s overarching policy guideline to mitigate climate risks and strengthen climate resilience across key socio-economic sectors.

Conclusion The forecast of a historic El Niño peak underscores the urgent need for proactive climate adaptation measures. Mitigating its adverse impacts on agricultural yields, water reserves, and weather patterns requires integrated disaster management strategies and long-term climate resilience planning.
