News: The Central Government is assessing the feasibility of developing a Bulk Cargo trans-shipment hub in Atlanta Bay near Diglipur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The hub is part of Galathea bay project.
• The proposed transshipment hub is strategically located on the route from East and North East India to East and South East Asia, Australia-New Zealand countries, and is also on the trade route used for transport of coal, sand, iron ore, among others, to Bangladesh and Myanmar. Once operationalized, the Bulk Cargo Transshipment Port will be economically beneficial for India and its neighbours.
• Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently visited Atlanta Bay and undertook an aerial survey and inspection of the proposed bulk cargo transshipment hub.
• The Atlanta Bay has a natural draft of 19/20m, there is availability of a natural break, and it is well connected by road. Also, sufficient land can be reclaimed from the sea.
• This initiative is part of the Indian government’s efforts to enhance the country’s maritime infrastructure and boost its connectivity with other countries.
