Gang That Circulated Fake Rs 20 Coins of Rs 70 Crore Value Busted

• Counterfeit Coin Syndicate Busted: Saharanpur Police arrested five members of an organized syndicate involved in manufacturing and circulating fake Rs 20 coins with an estimated face value of over Rs 70 crore. 

• Inter-State Operational Network: The syndicate operated across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar, using dedicated units to mint and transport counterfeit coins. 

 • Mass Production Capacity: The illegal manufacturing setup had the machinery to produce 10,000 to 12,000 fake coins daily, which were subsequently distributed through liquor shops, toll plazas, and grocery stores. 

• Significant Physical Seizures: Law enforcement seized 6,400 fake Rs 20 coins, semifinished coins worth around Rs 5 lakh, and six coin-making machines during the operation in Titron, Saharanpur.

• Parallel Probe by NIA: The arrest follows a related investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the recovery of Rs 17.29 crore in counterfeit currency from a nationalised bank\'s currency chest in the district.

 • Coinage Act, 2011: Regulates the mintage, standards, and legal tender status of coins, prohibiting illegal mintage, melting, or defacing of official coinage. 

• Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967: Classifies the production, smuggling, or circulation of High-Quality Counterfeit Indian Currency (FICN) as an act threatening the economic security of India under terror-funding definitions.

 • Article 246 of the Indian Constitution: Grants Union Parliament exclusive legislative power over currency, coinage, legal tender, and the Reserve Bank of India under Entry 36 of List I (Union List).
