News: The project has been in the news recently as the Government of India has decided to map and document all villages under the MGMD Programme.

About:
• The Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) project is a pan-India initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture under the National Mission on Cultural Mapping.
• The main objective of the project is to culturally map India’s 6.5 lakh villages, spanning 29 states and seven Union territories, on a comprehensive virtual platform. This platform connects people with the diverse cultural heritage of India’s villages.
• The project was launched as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

What is National mission on cultural mapping?
• The National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) is a mission mode project of the Ministry of Culture. It was conceptualized to develop a comprehensive database of artists, art forms, and other resources gathered from cultural organizations in the Ministry of Culture, other Ministries, and also States on a robust IT-enabled platform.
• Key objectives - To preserve the threads of rich Indian Art and Cultural Heritage, To convert the vast and widespread cultural canvas of India into an objective Cultural Mapping, To design a mechanism to fulfill the aspirations of the whole artist community of the nation and To create a strong “Cultural Vibrancy” throughout the nation.
