Indian Researchers Map Colonial Spider Venom: Anti-Cancer and Therapeutic Potential

 • The findings, published in Springer Nature\'s peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports, identified bioactive compounds with promising anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and immune-modulating properties.

 • Using integrated multi-omics techniques—including transcriptomics, proteomics, and UHPLCMS—the team mapped 31 transcriptomic protein components, 32 proteomic proteins, and 81 distinct metabolites within the venom gland. • In vitro laboratory trials demonstrated that venom gland extracts exhibit dose-dependent cytotoxicity against Dalton\'s Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) cancer cells, destroying a higher percentage of malignant cells at higher concentrations. 

• Key bioactive molecules discovered include hemocyanin proteins (vital for potential cancer immunotherapy) and U12/U20 lycotoxins (peptides that disrupt cell membranes of pathogens and cancer cells).  

• Stegodyphus sarasinorum is an Indian cooperative spider species that lives in permanent social colonies, constructs communal silk nests, and hunts cooperatively, making it an exceptional model for bio-prospecting research.
