Those aspirants who follow traditional approach believe in completing reference books first. Then they follow newspapers for current affairs and make separate notes for current affairs. They try to remember all the content noted down in their notes. The mains problem arises when they start to practice questions. They find questions which are based on current affairs but have some static portion of GS too in the form of statements in it. Now they find themselves in a dilemma that whether to focus on static part of GS more or to focus on current affairs first. Since they didn’t make notes that is based on current affairs but have static part of GS noted in it also, practicing questions based on UPSC pattern would become a trouble for them.
Traditional approach will tempt you in finishing books. For instance in case of Polity you will try to finish Laxmikanth, and then revise it. In doing so you might forget that UPSC does not set question paper only from laxmikanth. Sometimes it may happen that not a single question from the book is asked. What will you do then?
Then what is its solution?
Our answer is: Issue based Approach
In issue based approach, once you have gone through all subjects’ static part, now you have to relate it with current affairs. Take an issue from current affairs, then read whole article and collect as much information regarding news as you can. Now again think from which subject this news article relates, and revises that particular topic from GS static part.
In issue based approach you will have to cover different issues comprehensively from different sources. Some example of issues is:-
1.Indian Judiciary
2.Inter state issues in India
3.Various laws and constitutional protection granted to minorities in India.
You will realize that above mentioned issues can never be covered from single book alone. So whether you finish a book or not make sure you have covered important issues.
