The lure of becoming an IAS officer is certainly not limited to the payroll. It is a job of real administrative responsibility, with the opportunity to move across ministries and sectors, steady career development over the years, and a true chance to influence how public administration works on the ground.
According to the IAS pay rules and the 7th Pay Commission, in 2026, a directly recruited IAS officer will receive a basic salary of ?56,100 per month at Pay Level 10. The basic pay of the Cabinet Secretary grade is ?250,000 at the upper end.
An IAS officer earns more as he/she advances from one grade to another in the pay scale. Basic pay is just a part of the compensation package and the appropriate allowances are included in addition.
| Career Level | Pay Level | Starting Basic Pay |
| Junior Scale | Level 10 | ?56,100 |
| Senior Time Scale | Level 11 | ?67,700 |
| Junior Administrative Grade | Level 12 | ?78,800 |
| Selection Grade | Level 13 | ?1,18,500 |
| Super Time Scale | Level 14 | ?1,44,200 |
| Higher Administrative Grade | Level 15 | ?1,82,200 |
| Apex Scale | Level 17 | ?2,25,000 |
| Cabinet Secretary Grade | Level 18 | ?2,50,000 |
The full package an IAS officer takes home can include allowances and official facilities. These depend on the posting, the rules in force, and what is actually available at that location.
DA gets added to the basic pay. The government revises it from time to time to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Depending on the posting and applicable rules, an officer may receive government accommodation or housing-related benefits.
Travel allowances follow government rules. Some senior or field postings also come with official transport for carrying out government work.
Depending on the role and the posting, officers may get facilities linked to official communication, security, staff support, medical benefits, and government travel. These are not the same for every IAS officer at every stage of the career.
IAS career growth moves through different grades. It"s not simply a matter of acquiring a new designation every few years.
The eligibility is given in the IAS Pay Rules, which state that after 4 years of service, the IAS shall be at Senior Time Scale, after 9 years of service, at Junior Administrative Grade, after 13 years of service, at Selection Grade, and after 16 years of service, at Super Time Scale. All of this remains subject to the promotion rules and requirements in effect at the time.
As the career advances, officers can work in district administration, state government departments, central government ministries, and senior policymaking roles. The highest post in the pay structure is Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India.
Looking at the ?56,100 starting basic pay or the senior IAS posts is the simple part. Actually reaching that first posting means clearing one of India’s toughest competitive exams.
