How to calculate the score of UPSC Prelims after a negative marking?

Do you know there is negative marking in UPSC exams? It is surely an obstacle that makes it more difficult to pass the UPSC prelims and advance to the main exams.

Beware! Negative Marking Can Make Score Less

If there is a negative marking, all marks will be subtracted for the incorrect answers, regardless of how many accurate answers were given. It is crucial to consider negative markings while responding to questions because of this. If unsure of the appropriate response it is better to skip a question. However, if an aspirant responds incorrectly, points will be subtracted from the accumulated score.

Don’t know how to calculate marks for the UPSC exam?

Let’s learn how to calculate a score after a negative marking

  • The UPSC prelims" first paper is based on general studies.
  • The prelims exam lasts two hours and consists of 100 questions worth two marks each.
  • In this assignment, 0.66 is subtracted from each incorrect answer.

Correct Method for Calculating Score After Negative Marking in Paper-I

  • Find out how many answers were correct first.
  • Assume an aspirant answer 90 of the questions correctly after paying attention to every single one. If so, he or she will receive 180 points for doing so. The score will now be reduced by 6.6 points (0.66 is subtracted for each of the 10 incorrect answers). As a result, the final score would be 173.4 (180 – 6.6).
  • If the aspirant chooses not to respond to a question, there won"t be any penalty points which means the aspirant"s score would have been 180 instead of 173.4.

Correct Method for Calculating Score After Negative Marking in Paper II?

  • In the second paper of the preliminary test, there are 80 questions of 2.5 marks each.
  • Aspirants will lose 0.83 marks on this paper for each incorrect answer.
  • The final seven questions on the test are exempt from negative marking. Therefore, if an incorrect response is given to any of the questions from 74 to 80, no points will be lost.
  • Aspirants can now compute their marks for the second paper in a manner similar to Paper I.

Examinee should total the scores from the two papers after computing the individual scores. After negative marking, they can determine their score in the UPSC preliminary exams using this method.
