FAO strategy on Climate Change 2022-31

News: The strategy was recently released by FAO.

What is it?
• The FAO strategy on climate change is a plan of action that aims to support the transformation of agrifood systems to become more resilient, adaptive and low-emission, while contributing to food security and nutrition.
• The strategy has three pillars i) Strengthening global and regional climate policy and governance ii) Developing countries’ capacities for climate action and iii) Scaling up climate action on the ground.
• Sustainable and resilient agrifood systems provide a variety of solutions that respond to climate crisis challenges and contribute to restoring degraded natural and managed ecosystems.

What is strategy aligned with?
• The strategy is aligned with the FAO strategic framework 2022–2031, which is guided by the four betters
• better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life.
• The strategy also echoes the recognition of the Paris Agreement of the fundamental priority of safeguarding food security and ending hunger.

What challenges does it address?
It aims to address a broad range of interlinked challenges, including –
• Biodiversity loss,
• Desertification and land and environmental degradation,
• The need for accessible, affordable renewable energy, and
• Food and water security.

Conclusion
• The new Strategy looks beyond only food production by considering crops and livestock, forests, fisheries and aquaculture in a holistic manner, as well as embracing the indispensable role of women, youth and Indigenous Peoples, as essential agents of change.
