Understanding the GPSC Selection Process: From Prelims to Interview

The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) exam acts as a gateway to the impressive Deputy Collector, DSP posts, among others. But how exactly does the selection process work?

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand this procedure, stage by stage

The Preliminary Exam: A First, Still A Very Important Stage

Your GPSC journey starts with the Preliminary Examination, which consists of General Studies Paper I and Paper II, which is General Studies. Each consists of 200 marks. Out of these, General Studies 1 is sufficient for the selection, and General Studies 2 is the only qualifying, with 33% of the criteria being met. Both these papers are MCQ-based, with certain negative markings. That’s the cut-off for which you need to score in General Studies 1, and if you are successful, you proceed.

Main Exam: A Detailed Realisation

The Main Examination follows once you clear the prelims and this stage is a more descriptive paper. It consists of papers for which 900 marks in total can be obtained.

Paper 1: Gujarati Language
Paper 2: English Language
Paper 3: Essay
Paper 4: Gen. Studies 1
Paper 5: Gen. Studies 2
Paper 6: Gen. Studies 3

Each candidate is submitted to professional stress since, at this stage, writing, analytical, and topical competence is evaluated. Candidates aiming for success should try to score at least the 45-50% mark which is 400-450 marks.

The Interview: Your Personality Counts

The last round is the interview, which is weighed at 100 marks. This phase assesses your personality, interactions and decision-making ability. The range of inquiries the panel may make can be as light as your responses or as intense an opinion about topical issues. Your performance here, in conjunction with the marks in the Main Examination, will define your Main ranking.
