What is a Typhoon?
• A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that develops between 180° and 100°E in the Northern Hemisphere. This region is referred to as the Northwestern Pacific Basin, accounting for almost one-third of the world’s annual tropical cyclones.
• Typhoons are similar to hurricanes and cyclones, which are other types of tropical cyclones that form in different parts of the world. The main difference between them is their location and the direction of their rotation.
• Typhoons rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, while hurricanes rotate clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and cyclones rotate counterclockwise in the Indian Ocean.
