Green Ammonia

Green Ammonia

News: State-run V O Chidambaranar (VOC) Port located in Tamil Nadu has become the first port in India to handle green ammonia with the arrival of 20-inch tank containers loaded with the fuel from the Port of Damietta in Egypt.

What is Green Ammonia?
• Green ammonia is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional ammonia. It is produced using green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources.
• The process of making green ammonia is 100% renewable and carbon-free.
• One way of making green ammonia is by using hydrogen from water electrolysis and nitrogen separated from the air. These are then fed into the Haber process (also known as Haber-Bosch), all powered by sustainable electricity.
• However, the process of making ammonia is currently not a “green” process. It is most commonly made from methane, water, and air, using steam methane reforming (SMR) (to produce the hydrogen) and the Haber process. This process consumes a lot of energy and produces around 1.8% of global carbon dioxide emissions

Applications of Green Ammonia:
• Agriculture: Green ammonia can be used as a fertilizer, particularly in the production of nitrogen fertilizers.
• Fuel: Green ammonia can serve as a transition option for the transportation industry. It can replace highly polluting gasoline, diesel, and propane to run engines, generators, and turbines. It’s also being considered as a zero-carbon fuel for the maritime industry.
• Fuel Cells: Green ammonia fuel cells could be produced in the near future to fill the need for more practical and affordable fuel cells than hydrogen.
• Grid Storage: Green ammonia is a credible solution for energy storage, particularly for remote communities.
• Industrial Energy Source: Green ammonia can be used as an industrial energy source.
• Hydrogen Carrier: Ammonia is easier and cheaper to store and transport than hydrogen, and it can be readily “cracked” and purified to give hydrogen gas when required.

Government of India initiative – The GOI introduced Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia policy to promote Green hydrogen and green ammonia using renewable sources of energy
