News: The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in New Delhi concluded with representatives from 28 countries and the European Union adopting the ‘New Delhi Declaration.’

Background:
• India took over as Lead Chair on 12 December 2023 for 2023-24 and will serve as Outgoing Support Chair in 2024-25.

Key Highlights of New Delhi Declaration:
• The declaration focuses on collaboration, inclusion, and creating a governance framework on AI.
• It promises to position GPAI at the front and center of shaping the future of AI in terms of both innovations, and creating collaborative AI between the partner nations to create applications of AI in healthcare, agriculture, and other areas of concern.
• The declaration emphasizes the inclusive nature of GPAI, with a focus on including the countries of the global south and making available the benefits of AI to everyone.
• The Minister also informed that Senegal was elevated to the steering committee during the second day of the summit, as India looks to further expand GPAI during its presidency in the coming year.
• Over the next few months, GPAI will work together to lay out some broad principles, and a mid-term GPAI sitting will be held to discuss those principles and targets.
• Commitment was made to pursue a diverse membership for GPAI, with a particular focus on including low and middleincome countries. The declaration aims to ensure a broad range of expertise, national and regional views and shared.
• Concerns related to misinformation, unemployment, lack of transparency, fairness, protection of intellectual property, and threats to human rights and democratic values were also flagged at the summit.

What is GPAI?
• The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) is a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities. It was launched in June 2020.
• It’s founding members includes several countries such as India, Australia, UK, USA, Canada, France, EU, South Korea etc.
• Secretariat – it’s secretariat is hosted at OECD, Paris.
