News: The United Nations Security Council took no immediate action at a closed emergency meeting late Friday requested by Guyana after Venezuela’s referendum claiming the vast oil- and mineral-rich Essequibo region that makes up a large part of its neighbor.

About:
• The Essequibo region, also known as Guayana Esequiba or Esequibo, is a disputed territory of 159,500 km² (61,600 sq mi) west of the Essequibo River.
• The territory is claimed by both Guyana and Venezuela, but Guyana has controlled the area based on the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award.
• The dispute over the area began in 1841when the Venezuelan government disputed the Schomburgk Line, a border that gave the United Kingdom control over the mouth of the Orinoco River, demarcated by a British expedition sent to clarify the borders of the territory of Guyana purchased from the Netherlands. The dispute has persisted following the independence of Venezuela and Guyana.
• The Essequibo region is rich with more than 160,000 km² of territory, offshore oil areas offering a high potential for exploitation, and an estimated population of approximately 125,000 inhabitants. It is also home to the Essequibo River, the largest river in Guyana that lies between the Orinoco and Amazon rivers of South America.
