State Biodiversity Conservation Award

News: Rajahmundry Central Prison has been honored with the Biodiversity Conservation Award by the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board.

This prestigious recognition celebrates the prison\'s commitment to eco-friendly practices within its premises, including initiatives such as groundwater preservation, adoption of natural farming techniques, and the utilization of natural resources for crafting various products.

State Biodiversity Board:

• Establishment:
- SBBs are established by State Governments in accordance with Section 22 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

• Composition:
- A Chairperson.
- Maximum of five ex officio members representing various state government departments.
- Maximum of five experts in fields related to biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, and equitable benefit-sharing.
- All members are appointed by the respective State Governments.

• Functions:
- Advisory Role: Advise State Governments on biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of biological components, and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of biological resources.
- Regulatory Authority: Regulate approvals for commercial use and bio-utilization of biological resources by Indian entities.

• Coverage:
- SBBs are established in all states, while Union territories do not have separate SBBs. The National Biodiversity Authority fulfills the role of SBBs for Union territories, exercising similar powers and functions.
