Context: An alert has been issued to police departments in states and Union Territories by the Union Home Ministry amid the surge in the ‘Digital Arrest’ trend.
• Definition: Digital arrest is a new and innovative tactic employed by cybercriminals to defraud gullible victims and extort money.
• Modus Operandi: Fraudsters pose as law enforcement officials, such as police, Enforcement Directorate, or CBI. They manipulate victims into believing they have committed a serious crime.
• Deception Technique: Victims are deceived into believing they have been put under ‘digital arrest’. Victims are told they will be prosecuted if they do not pay the scammers a large amount of money.
• Use of Authenticity: Cybercriminals often use pictures or identities of police personnel to appear authentic.
• Monetary Demand: Criminals usually demand money from the target for a ‘compromise’ and closure of the
fictitious case.
