About:
The Barberton Greenstone Belt is a geological formation situated on the eastern edge of the Kaapvaal Craton in South Africa.
The rocks within the Barberton Greenstone Belt are among the oldest exposed rocks on Earth, dating back to greater than 3.6 billion years ago.
These ancient rocks provide valuable insights into the early Earth’s history and contain some of the oldest traces of life, second only to the Isua Greenstone Belt in Western Greenland.
It is known for its gold mineralization and for containing komatiites, which are an unusual type of ultramafic volcanic rock named after the Komati River that flows through the belt.
The Makhonjwa Mountains make up 40% of the Barberton Greenstone Belt.
