Australia Bans Live Sheep Exports
News: Australia has announced its intention to implement a ban on the export of live sheep by sea, effective May 1, 2028. This prohibition, however, will not extend to other livestock export sectors, such as live cattle exports. Additionally, live sheep exports by air will remain unaffected by this measure.
Calls to cease live sheep shipments from Australia have been persistently advocated by animal rights organizations, driven in part by a significant public outcry in 2018. The deaths of 2,400 sheep due to heat stress during transport sparked demands for more rigorous welfare regulations and standards.
Australia is not the first country to ban live exports. New Zealand and the UK banned live animal exports last year, and the European Union is also considering banning live exports.
